Confucius

Confucius was born in 551BC in China in the state of Lu currently known as Shandong Province. His father died when he was 3 years old. At the age of 15, he fixed his mind on learning. In 501BC, at the age of 51, he was made a magistrate and became Minister of Public Works. As a magistrate, he is said to have brought great peace to his country. He started a tradition of liberal and moral education in China and made it open to all without any class distinction. His simple moral and political teachings are:

- Love others

- Honor your parents

- Do what is right rather than trying to gain advantage

- Do unto others what you would like others to do unto you

To rule by moral example rather than by force or violence

He believes that moral education should start with the family so there must be filial piety and brotherly love and respect. When one cultivates in one's personal life, the family will be able to live in peace and harmony. When the family unit is able to function in this state, then the country  will also become a place of order and harmony.

The confucian teaching appeals to the human heart - the moral nature of a human being. When we have all attained the full development of man, we will enjoy an ideal society. A society free from disturbances, crime and violence. Self realization is a step towards world peace which is the ultimate goal of Confucian Teaching.

Confucius was China's most famous teacher/philospher and political theorist. He was not a religious leader for his teachings were essentially a social ethic. He died at the age of 73.
